Looked it up, apparently they did an Obsession parody, but no one got the reference so it looked like the CEO of the company just pushed a woman to the ground for trying to touch his golf clubs.

I honestly don’t give a fuck if it was a reference to something, depicting violence against women to protect your fucking golf clubs from cooties or whatever is wildly unacceptable. The fact that even the script got approved is mind boggling, let alone that the shoot, editing, and distribution all pushed it through.

To be fair, it wasn’t Callaway directly. It was Good Good Golf, a golf youtube channel, that aired the ad. Callaway had a partnership with them to cobrand the golf club, but dropped Good Good immediately after the ad and canceled the branded club.
Callaway still deserves the backlash from associating with them though and apparently someone giving the ok for the ad.

Yes, the company that made the ad. Unless something happened that I’m not aware of, nothing has happened to the marketing firm who made the ad nor the various companies who served the ad to audiences.
The question was phrased in a way asking if an ad platform ran it across their standards and practices to see if the ad should be aired. The ad was in poor taste, but it could be shown on network television so no one stopped it. The risk for showing a controversial ad is near zero. The only company dealing with a boycott is the company that was advertising its product.
That’s not what free speech is. Free speech doesn’t let you say whatever you want to anyone, it’s intention is to protect you while speaking out against government officials and offices. Last I checked Callaway wasn’t the 4th branch of the government, let’s not give turkey neck any ideas.
The FCC should be regulating ads like this, but this is a clown country and capitalism says domestic violence is a viable commodity to sell.
While the topic was abhorrent and in bad taste, I don’t think there was ever a time when the FCC banned jokes about spouse/family abuse.
The Honeymooners regularly joked about the husband finally breaking and beating his wife. I Love Lucy had an episode where Lucy tried to get a sunburn so Ricky wouldn’t beat her as hard for buying an expensive dress. The Simpsons had Homer choking Bart as a running gag. All these shows were on Broadcast TV.
The FCC being useless and bought off still doesn’t mean that Callaway gets special first amendment protections. They’re a corporation, they aren’t protected from consumers and retailers dropping their products for promoting crimes, or from potential lawsuits as a result of harmful marketing.
Again, this topic has nothing to do with free speech.
I bring it up because companies which broadcast and publish material are generally given greater deference by the public for showing material they disagree with. As long as the standards are adhered to evenly, the broadcaster isn’t going to be boycotted for an ad. No one is boycotting the television stations and streamers for airing this ad; all the attention is going to Calloway.
The consequences of free speech are felt by those paying for it in public opinion, not those serving it.

I’m NGL, initially i thought “This is probably one of those wacky ads taken out of context.” And no, it’s really really super gross. There’s nothing humorous about it, it’s just a really serious ad about pushing down and threatening a woman who touches your golf club.

Personally I think that if you set out to invent the most boring sport you wouldn’t be able to beat golf but I accept that some people strangely do find it attractive and they’re not all toxic masculinity “alpha” types, so they should really have seen that one coming.

There is absolutely nothing about a golf course that resembles nature. It’s nothing but chemicals and underpaid guys with gas fume belching machines.
If you want a wandering outdoor sport with real nature, try out frisbee golf or field archery. They also have the bonus of not destroying habitats and polluting local waterways with way too much nitrogen fertilizer.
Aye and no. Don’t get me wrong, golf courses are as you say fertiliser polluted and lacking in biodiversity. But the rough, surrounding the whole course, and the woods they’re often placed in certainly resemble nature. There’s still birds, foxes, squirrels, etc, going about.
Certainly in Scotland at least, which is my only personal experience of courses. And being the home of golf I don’t think it’s disingenuous for me to use that as a basis for the claim.
I have seen videos and pictures of courses in places like Florida though and if a Scottish course is a tragedy of nature, a Florida course is an abomination.

You’re right that Scotland and a few other places with a climate identical to Scotland it’s fine. That is a very small portion of the world’s golf courses.
I’m quite fond of golf (it’s really cheap to play near me) and honestly there’s a steep learning curve. And it’s only fun once you get past that. But I like how you get instant feedback on how you did, especially if you play with friends. Improving at golf feels great, but I imagine it kinda sucks once you plateau.
I haven’t played golf yet (only minigolf), but i could see me enjoying it on a warm spring day with some clouds to take a stroll on the green while actually pursuing a specific goal. But I would rather take a walk in the woods, which is a much more relaxing area to be in.
Croquet is more boring than golf. And I fucking hate golf and golfers.

It’s true, and I think a big factor is they have a genuinely brilliant business model.
Basically they sell everything in bulk and roughly at cost, and make their whole profit from membership fees. This is brilliant because it creates upsides for all 3 parties involved:
- the consumer gets cheap items
- the brands selling things get large bulk sales negotiated in advance
- Costco gets a stable and extremely popular store
I shill for Costco whenever I can because this has been my experience too. Their employee badges have “member since” on them and there’s a LOT of people who have been there for 15+ years. Also 2 dollars gets you a slice of pizza that takes up a whole paper plate.
They are in Canada too, and yeah they are the best US store chain by far. Still don’t buy from them tho
Costco Canada employee here. Yeah there is a lot of corporate bullshit, but also a lot of good. I help send out pallets of stuff to local food banks and animal shelters every day. I have the mid level benefits that give me 80 percent of all my healthcare expenditures. All of them.
In two weeks I will top out on the pay scale at $34.40/hr. I started with Costco in 2022, and I’m just a returns clerk in the back, not a manager or supervisor.
In Canada it feels like a, “the enemy of my enemy” situation. Yes they’re a massive US company, but our own grocery oligopoly doesn’t feel great to support either. Shopping local is the best option, but cost can often be a problem.

I almost bought some Taylor Farms salad mix from Costco yesterday before my wife pointed out the brand name (what can I say, it was on sale and I’m a sucker for a discount). Costco is better than most retailers, but there are still plenty of problematic brands that they do carry.

It used to be like that in the US a few decades ago, and then they transitioned into a “professional store hours” and “public store hours” situation. Now they’ve scrapped the restrictions entirely for the normal warehouses and in highly populated areas they built more warehouses called “Costco Business” warehouses.
There’s no restriction based on professions. You just have to pay the annual membership fee, which is about $60.
Not sure if this is what they were talking about, but there are some Costcos that only sell to businesses. Have a bit of an uproar where I live because one downtown is switching to that, and there’s not many other grocery options in the area.
In Canada, you used to have to have a public service ID or select professional societies. They got rid of that a couple decades ago. Now you pay the free for a regular or executive membership and you’re good.

Nah it’s probably just certain clubs and perhaps even a regional thing. I know people who golf that are perfectly normal. It’s just something fun to do, be out in nature, shoot the shit with friends and have a nice game among friends. They don’t take it very seriously at all.
I went with them once and it was a fun time. The golf course we went to wasn’t some kind of weird exclusive rich people club. Just a nice golf course with a rental place for equipment for visitors and a good restaurant/bar for lunch, drinks and dinner. We stayed for dinner and it was a good time. The golf course was full of regular folk having fun. There were no golf carts on this property, people just walked.
We were behind a group of girls who weren’t very good and spent more time doing selfies and filming than actually playing the game. They had 7 people, which the course normally doesn’t allow, but the management said they thought it wouldn’t be that busy that day so allowed it. Normally they allow 4 people max, maybe 5 as an exception. Otherwise they need to split up as to not block a hole too long causing a line to form behind them. We opted to skip the hole they were on, so we would be in front of them and didn’t have to wait all the time. The girls had enough by lunchtime and spent the rest of the day taking selfies at the bar. So we backtracked and did the hole we missed.
It was really fun, I was just very bad at it. My drives were very good, but my putting was awful. I only had mini-golf experience, so I thought it would be the other way around. But putting on an actual green with a real putter is something completely different from mini-golf it turns out.
This is far closer to my own experience with golfing. It’s like people hear about the absolute worst case scenario of rich assholes, private clubs, and people who take things way too seriously, and then assume that those problems are inherent to golf itself.
The little bit of golfing I’ve done was always at public courses, and it was always just normal people around.
I get the feeling that the golf is just the structure to get wasted and do mild exercise with tangential friends under the guise of career networking. It beats having to deal with the family.
Is there a source for them not carrying the imported beef? I realize they have their own beef supply but I haven’t found anything where they’ve officially announced this.
