Yes it’s true, I’m going back to Reddit and I’m happy to go. There’s a reason it’s called the front page of the internet. We all know that Reddit is superior in every way so let’s stop pretending otherwise.

Sorry, that was clickbait! Well, partially clickbait.

I am going back to Reddit, and I think you should consider it too. Please hear me out!

I recently went to see what was happening on Reddit out of curiosity. It’s still Reddit, lol.

BUT! I’ve noticed a gradual shift in sentiment. More and more people are starting to show discontent with all sorts of things such as corporate greed, class struggle, authoritarian practices… Tons of stuff that people on Lemmy have been talking about for a long time.

To me, it seems that many of them are wanting change like many of us, but they might lack the resources or helpful assistance they need to support them further. Reddit is a hard place to escape for many.

My long-winded point: I’ve been posting every few days on topics to share my true opinions, to reply to people, and to share my contribution on politics and tech and culture, and also on the mere existence of Lemmy as a place they might feel more at home. Now obviously, I’m not trying to be a marketing arm for Lemmy. It’s not Lemmy that I give a shit about. What I give a shit about is getting more people on this side of the aisle, however you might define that.

Not everyone is a total idiot, not everyone is a bot, not everyone is defeatist. Lots of them are, but what about you and I? Did somebody tell you about Lemmy in the past, and are you better off for it? If your answer is yes, then I truly think it’s worth doing the same courtesy for potential newcomers, in your own personal way.

Instead of abandoning everyone there, let’s extend a hand instead. If they swat your hand away, they weren’t going to listen anyway.

For me it’s not only been about leaving Reddit, it’s also about educating on open source, data sovereignty, user-friendly platforms, etc. Not being a dick for the choice of platform, but being somebody that’s there to say “hey, I’ve got you”.

I hope that makes sense. Thoughts and opinions obviously welcome! Sorry again for the clickbait, I’ve never tried it before!

I’m glad you go out and help promote federated alternatives and open source to the folks on Reddit. I made a vow 3 years ago never to post again on Reddit and I’m keeping to that, otherwise I would, like people who are in !fedigrow@lemmy.zip, I bet you will find people with similar aims there.

I am by no means an expert and I definitely have opinions, but I think the biggest hurtle we’re ever going to have to find a way to jump over is answering the instance question. When someone wants to look something up on Reddit, or Facebook, or wherever, they just… go there. The fediverse takes a giant wrench to that idea and people’s brains need to rewire to accept that.

I grew up in the 90’s myself, so Lemmy/Mastodon/whatever is basically what I was used to, without the dialup. Facebook didn’t exist then. You had MSN Messenger, AIM, ICQ, IRC and whatever else you could find/someone introduced you to. There’s a reason some of those (see also: IRC) still persist today.

The hard part is not having a strong opinion on Reddit. IT’s coming over here and realizing you can have the same strong opinion here. Most people need a reason to, and sometimes, the reason is Reddit did a thing. For example, I’m here because Reddit’s killing RSS feeds in November. They never do that, maybe I never come here. But I promise I can piss people off on either platform. :)

I think whatever your reason for leaving is valid. I just want to encourage people still on Reddit to hear other voices. I remember when one of the few big waves of ‘moving to Lemmy’ happened, and that’s awesome, but I think keeping the sentiment alive and ongoing is also important.

Thank you for the post, and I’m sorry that it’s catching a lot of downvotes from people who didn’t read the body of the post 😄 If it helps, it’s possible to edit the title if you want to

I also try to work with people who are still on reddit from time to time, and I agree that it can be helpful. I’d love to hear more about where you are focussing your efforts!

Haha not a problem. To be honest I detest clickbait so I get it, but I thought in this narrow instance it served the post well. As long as one person considers it, I call the post a win. Whether the title should be changed, I have no preference!

Cool to hear that I’m not the only one who’s doing this.

As for my efforts, a lot of it is in the same old subreddits I used to visit - mostly subreddits about general tech, self-hosting, culture, news, etc., As well as those around more recent interests such as grapheneos, OPsec, and an honourable mention to /r/EhBuddyHoser. I just comment on any article here or there when one sparks my interest, give advice to people asking, and oh-so-delicately try to correct any incorrect claims that I think are harmful. That last one is tough to do online in general. Don’t want to anger them, don’t want to alienate them, don’t want them to assume I think I know everything, don’t want them to think I’m using AI.

Honestly, the thing that helps me most is remembering who the adversary is, and it’s not the people on Reddit. I remind myself that it’s a class struggle above all else, including ideology.

And what about you? I’d like to hear.

Sorry for the rambling, sometimes I just have too much to say.

            That makes sense!

For me, these days it’s mostly on subreddits/posts that are discussing the fediverse, or are a source of a lot of users coming to Lemmy (or lemmy.ca specifically, such as the case with r/buycanadian). In the discussions, I try to answer questions the best I can, and I’m honest about any limitations that people bring up. If someone sounds like they want to talk more about it, I might talk to them over DMs, modmail, or on other platforms. You can see some of that here: https://www.reddit.com/u/otter_fedecan

In the past, I also had conversations with my personal account, but I prefer to keep that separate now that I have this one.

Sorry for the rambling, sometimes I just have too much to say.

Not at all, I found all of that relevant and helpful :)

my accounts were nuked from orbit back in the r/conspiracy 2020 election meltdown. if I register an account it gets shadowbanned immediately. I also cannot fucking stand that app and its hardcoded ads and sponsored links, so I don’t even lurk for more than a few minutes on rare occasions.

I only browse reddit on computers with RES. Coupled with ad-blocking nameserver that gives me a clean look. But it’s not any better IMO. But then I was there when the Digg crowd came, so what I miss is the 2009 version when it really was the front page and regular beat the news and had better experts

There are accessibility-focused apps that have an advertising and API exemption.

On my spare phone for junk, I use an app called “Dystopia” (yes that’s the real name). It functions just like a regular app.

That app is no longer being developed, for many of the same reasons people are leaving Reddit. Hell, I created my account in the last 24 hours because Reddit announced it was killing RSS feeds in the last 24 hours. The more Reddit becomes shit, the more people are going to want to recreate Reddit on Lemmy.

I worked for a billion dollar corporation and I can say that we used to argue that you could buy local chicken, throwing your food cost out the window, or you could use Tyson…which, ONCE WE GET THE LARGEST PURCHASING SHARE OF WE CAN CONTROL HOW THEY RAISE CHICKENS.

Needless to say, we would have to have been in the hundreds of trillions annually to accomplish that little tidbit of sustainability…

What I’m saying is that you spin a good yarn for corporate assholes.

You do you, I’ll keep on keeping on.

While still giving a dislike for the clickbait and ragebait combo, agreed that presence is needed, both to propagate one’s own ideas, and to keep competition minimally functional. In this latter point, after all, if the fediverse for some reason becomes the only solution, then it becomes the problem.

The decentralized nature of the Fediverse gives me hope that it won’t be as easily enshittified or be able to form a defacto monopoly. But we’re a far way away from that being a reality. If that happens, many of us are going to need to start the migration process all over again. I’m confident that developers passionate about FOSS and privacy, etc. , will come together as they always do.

Btw, and entering a bit on the topic of #fedigrow, a considerable chunk of the fediverse from what I can observe still is mostly flavors of the same niches few niches. If people have interest stuff from niches not yet covered here, or barely so, posting is more than welcomed.

Also someone mentioned the formation of clusters of niches in the fediverse a while back. While I can’t see that much yet, it sounds reasonable that it’d happen. So if you know the person you’re recommending the network to, it helps picking a better instance and software for his/her needs. Also having some presence in the instance to be recommended yourself helps, at least by following communities and (in microblog or hybrid platforms) people too, so you can help populate it before the person gets in.

I used to talk about the fediverse and Lemmy on reddit when I had one.

I’d post links to different things for people to learn about it all. I’m think Reddit shadow bans links and maybe even mentions about Lemmy and fediverse. When a comment mentioned these things, eventually they would get zero “views”. They also banned the old fediverse sub a while back.

If I broke up the words or links the comments would get views. Just keep an eye on that I guess.

It’s true that every major social media platform induces a sort of ‘Stockholm syndrome’ on their users with centralized and opaque decision making and predatory algorithms.
