It’s incredible how far we’ve got, as far as technology goes. A few months ago, we had to fight to get a device that would not connect to the internet. And now we’re fighting to find software that actually do what it’s supposed to do, and don’t do what it’s not supposed to do.

Can’t wait for the next step. Heck, can’t even imagine what it will be at this point.

That makes me feel better… I disliked office 365. How does it compare with keyboard shortcuts? I barely use the mouse these days.

As a side note, damn we are an old bunch here.

I wasn’t much of a power user to begin with but the Calc and Impress programs felt almost the same with some minor UI changes that take some getting used to like having to open a pop up settings menu rather than check the tools ribbon.

It certainly is. If you wanna feel like you’ve rewound 10 years in the past, you gotta pony up. And even still everything feels wrong.

But in the interim, before the bubble pops, I do see the value in having no AI as a feature, especially when the immediate alternative is “go fuck yourself”.

One payment for actual slop removal, priced by devs properly to allow them somewhat equivalent revenue compared to if you were being data harvested - that’s basically the only good way to do it if we’re gonna do it.

No micro transactions and no double or triple or quadruple or quintuple or sextuple dipping on larger payments either.

When did everything become a fever dream?

It should also be a feature to have no AI used in the production. No AI assets, no AI concept art, no AI code, I don’t want any of that slop touching my software

I really need to work on my 100% slop-free OS. The bulk of the work is getting a clean kernel setup, the compiler and libc working, and that’s about it; the rest is easy.

P.S. wow you’re me but a cis dude

Nice! Will it be a Linux distro, or its own thing? And if it is its own thing, how will it handle things from other OS, like exe from windows?

Also, when you say I am you, do you mean from my profile description we are the same? :3c

The Linux kernel is tAInted, so it would need to be forked. My current top choice is the NetBSD: it isn’t going anywhere, and it’s untainted.

I also looked at Redox (sadly Rust is tAInted, so it’s a no-go), and Haiku (which is just… a little too obscure). GNU Hurd is tAInted too, and isn’t as good of a kernel, so if I’m gonna clean up a kernel, it’ll be Linux. Otherwise, it’s gonna likely gonna be NetBSD.

So… not really a Linux distro, I’d say, but definitely a Unix-like OS.

As for software from other operating systems, it depends on the kernel I choose. If it’s a Linux fork, I’ll be super careful to keep it compatible with the Linux ABI. If it’s NetBSD, there’s compat_linux for Linux binaries. I believe Wine has taken an anti-“AI” stance, so Windows should be alright—if not: old versions exist.

As for your last question: I’m a transfemme (our main difference), (anarcho, probably)-communist, bi/pan, polyamorous, anti-“AI” programmer (who is very open to DMs (I’m lonely af)) :3

The way the commercialization of LLMs just ruined the word AI, word processors have been using AI in other ways for ages

It’s among the more annoying parts of the whole AI thing, amid an ocean of things too-concerning-to-be-annoying.

“AI” / llm’s, are not artificial intelligence in the way laypeople mean it, and in the sense that LLM’s are AI - we’ve had AI for decades. Occasionally I’ll be socializing with someone I consider very intellgenet (e.x. recently, a chemical engineer) who was telling me how they just learned AI’s ‘just predict the next word’, and it just bugs me so so much how little people understand these things.

Like, they are ruining our world. Climate, commerce, security - everything is going to get a LOT shittier. And you don’t understand at a basic level how it works. It’s just sad.

People don’t realise that there’s more to AI than LLMs and chat bots, and that plenty of software has been using AI (machine learning, neutral networks, forecast modeling, etc) for at least a decade or two.

That’s a technicality. The term AI do encompass a TON of things, but it is as irrelevant as saying “crypto” isn’t just the scam machine we know. For most people, it is. And for most people, AI is “Gemini/Claude/ChatGPT”. And telling them the difference isn’t gonna matter at all.

I wonder if some people compiled a list of terms that got so removed from their actual meaning because of advertisement/commercial use. Like, “wifi” is synonymous to “wireless internet access” to so many people, and yet it’s actually not.

Maybe, but i guess that has also to do with the fact, that a lot of companies don’t seem to have any idea what the legitimate use case could be, so they throw it everywhere and see where it sticks. Which kinda reminds me of the company i’ve worked for several years ago, which was basically just “let’s throw GPS data onto a map and see what happens” for 20 years, and was struggling when logistics companies wanted a bit more than just a damn map. They had to rework the entire interface.

Only a matter of time until all the “chatbox with addons” providers go down the drain…

LibreOffice says “Free and private office suite, no forced AI” but iirc their contribution guidelines are ai permissive.

I don’t know, Integration with a local instance of ollama from an open source text editor it would be perfectly fine for me. I write enough that a grammar-aware typo correction would be awesome. At work I find Gmails AI suggestions quite useful, especially when writing in languages where i am not fluent. That buy open source and self hosted? Yes, please.

The thing is… this setup works. But is it good? I too find text corrections to be a great application, but thinking about it I’m just blindly accepting most suggestions. I use that tool because I’m not confident enough to double-check my spelling and grammar, so naturally I can’t really double check the tool’s output either.

In areas where I’m way more knowledgeable, the usefulness seems to vanish. Namely, writing code. It’s doing really silly, yet valid things. The only difference is that I can spot them in this case, while on text correction I can’t.

AI is shit. AI is decent.? When… People will argue.

Let’s be honest and speak about it. IF and “AI” analyses and soley discusses what’s going on on your machine with no outbound channels while recommending when a appointment is in your calendar, how much of a check you should pay, or why your invite to the pool on Sunday interferes with your date night… The AI is “bad” for using resources. Way worse if it consults resources… it won’t for those tasks though. It will for image generation. (Should likely never happen). So honestly, if you were to say what you hate about it outside of public opinion, what is it? The theft of ideas? Makes sense. The theft of property 100%. Now that it’s done… what does a person do?

The worst part about this comment is that it says “edited” in the top. So this guy wrote the comment, posted it, read it back, realized that he needs to fix it, edited it, presumably looked it again and decided “yup, that’s what I want to say” and sent it.

Yeah I get that. I have quite dead pan delivery and “blunt” humor IRL, that doesn’t translate very well over text, I really should be more mindful about that. Wouldn’t be the first, second or a hundredth time that someone mistook my stupid joke comments as a “fuck you”.

Just yesterday a guy on IRC, who I’ve talked to for months said “I never know if you are joking or pissed off” lol.
