One of the comments on the announcement of LibreOffice 26.8 was a simple question: “So, no AI is now a feature?” LibreOffice does not reject artificial intelligence out of hand, but an office suite used by tens of millions of people – in schools, hospitals, public bodies, law firms and thousands of other organisations – will not add a feature to its default configuration until that feature can be delivered under the conditions defined by the project in accordance with its principles. User-controlled execution. The user must be able to choose where inference takes place: on the local computer, on an infrastructure directly controlled by the user, or on a service chosen independently by the user. A default setting that silently redirects to a single provider is not a choice. No content may leave the computer without authorisation. The content of documents is a user’s asset and, in many implementations, is also legally protected material: medical records, case files, tender documents and student data. Transmission must be the result of a user’s decision and not behaviour carried out in the background by the application. No telemetry of any kind. LibreOffice does not collect usage data, and this must also apply

The way the commercialization of LLMs just ruined the word AI, word processors have been using AI in other ways for ages
It’s among the more annoying parts of the whole AI thing, amid an ocean of things too-concerning-to-be-annoying.
“AI” / llm’s, are not artificial intelligence in the way laypeople mean it, and in the sense that LLM’s are AI - we’ve had AI for decades. Occasionally I’ll be socializing with someone I consider very intellgenet (e.x. recently, a chemical engineer) who was telling me how they just learned AI’s ‘just predict the next word’, and it just bugs me so so much how little people understand these things.
Like, they are ruining our world. Climate, commerce, security - everything is going to get a LOT shittier. And you don’t understand at a basic level how it works. It’s just sad.
People don’t realise that there’s more to AI than LLMs and chat bots, and that plenty of software has been using AI (machine learning, neutral networks, forecast modeling, etc) for at least a decade or two.
That’s a technicality. The term AI do encompass a TON of things, but it is as irrelevant as saying “crypto” isn’t just the scam machine we know. For most people, it is. And for most people, AI is “Gemini/Claude/ChatGPT”. And telling them the difference isn’t gonna matter at all.
I wonder if some people compiled a list of terms that got so removed from their actual meaning because of advertisement/commercial use. Like, “wifi” is synonymous to “wireless internet access” to so many people, and yet it’s actually not.
Because back then it isn’t a keyword smack across industry, not intrusive, without threatening every employees that they might left out, and no chip shortage. It’s a branding, you can’t blame people for not knowing.
But this is a bit pedantic, people refer to GenAI when they say AI, you can blame corporations for using it as a magic word for investors
Technically a portable implementation of AI, so you can say to the boss you’re working with AI right now.
Maybe, but i guess that has also to do with the fact, that a lot of companies don’t seem to have any idea what the legitimate use case could be, so they throw it everywhere and see where it sticks. Which kinda reminds me of the company i’ve worked for several years ago, which was basically just “let’s throw GPS data onto a map and see what happens” for 20 years, and was struggling when logistics companies wanted a bit more than just a damn map. They had to rework the entire interface.
Only a matter of time until all the “chatbox with addons” providers go down the drain…
Ahem. I think you mean SI /s
Stupid Idea.
