Update: thank you ALL for all your input! 💐 After some back and forth with @thorry@feddit.org , I decided to simply swap between the two capture cards whenever I need to, in order to make room for my old 3080 and call it a day. This way, I won’t have to spend any more money on this project and I retain the processing power of the 3080 when I start encoding my raw captures.
Here I thought I had been insanely smart to buy a GPU from 2010 for $10 since the CPU is going to do all the encoding anyway. And because my previous card, a honking 3080, wouldn’t have allowed for the other two capture cards to be installed, taking up all the real estate.
I have been trying to setup an Artix system on my own for two hours now, but GRUB won’t install in CSM mode… I’ve tried UEFI on GPT, BIOS on MBR, BIOS on GPT… 😅 Boot partition with and without file system… 💀
I’ll just buy a more modern yet slim card, I guess? Unless I wake up tomorrow and give researching the issue a chance.

3 keyboards and 2 mice.
Funny thing is, I have 2 keyboards and a standalone numpad and one mouse, but one of the keyboards registers itself in the system as keyboard and mouse, because it has mouse moving hotkeys.
So my system literally thinks I have 3 keyboards and 2 mice.
- I use a split ergo keyboard for typing. (this one has the mouse stuff)
- A 65% keyboard for gaming (so I have lots of room for the mouse and don’t have to change the keybindings for the split one)
- A numpad off to the left so it doesn’t block mouse space, need it for some games and spreadsheets.
After a work day is over I shove the split keyboard under the monitor and pull out the gaming one and place the mouse differently.
People that visit always comment on how weird that is, but it works for me.
I wonder if some similar fuckery is going on with my hardware, cause i noticed my bios also claiming that i had multiple mice and keyboards, when i only had one of each, and i was always confused by that

Yeah get a simple but recent AMD card, older cards, especially nVidia are a nightmare. I had an old 980 TI which was a really good card still, but I couldn’t use it anymore because everything kept breaking. So I got me a recent AMD card and it has been running perfectly.
So I ended up ordering a ASUS GeForce GT 1030 silent anyway, because I couldn’t find any AMD GPUs that are less than or equal to 40 mm thick. I’m picking it up tomorrow and I’ll test it immediately. If it doesn’t work, I’ll return it.
Oof, that’s a terrible card. The GP108 chip is a rebatched mobile card Geforce MX 150, it’s a pretty ancient chip at this point. There are no drivers for it, so you’ll need to use older drivers or limited open source drivers. Unless you got it very very cheap that’s not going to work very well for you. It’s newer than a GT 220, but not by much.
Aaah fuck me. 😅 I haven’t paid yet, so maybe I’ll just leave it there then. Aaah how hard can this shit be 🤣
Edit: thanks for the heads up!!!Look for second hand stuff and something like a 6000 series from AMD. Don’t buy cheap videocards new, they always suck.
How about an Intel? This one would even just fit geometrically.
Ignore the other guy on this, I have an A770 in my gaming ring and a B60 in my server. The drivers are amazing on Linux, and much better than NVIDIA.
If all you need is encoding, then VAAPI just works. There are some other caveats with the Alchemist series, which is mostly it was made during the transition to
xe, which means you either pick better encoding withi915(default) or better gaming performance withxe. For your use case I’d leave it with the defaulti915, though there are encoding patches forxeif you must use the newer driver. Both drivers are mainlined and officially supported by Intel.I was going to say, Intel GPUs work great on Linux these days. For more modern Intel cards (if not all Intel GPUs), it’s also part of the kernel, just like AMD cards.
The A series is pretty limited, I would go for a B series if you can find it. But keep in mind drivers for Intel on Windows are terrible and on Linux even worse. So that would not be a good time.
There’s plenty of cards that would fit in 40mm, but your airflow would be pretty bad. Do you have a pic of the inside of your system? There has to be a way to make something more fit.
But most 6600, 7600 and 9060 cards should be able to fit in 40mm. And with AMD the drivers on Linux are very good.

I just removed the GPU, which sat in the PCIe 4.0 slot - which I guess really doesn’t matter, since capturing shouldn’t rely on the GPU, right? (Perhaps when I encode with
ffmpegthough… Even then, I don’t mind letting it encode through the night.) The top and bottom cards are the capture cards.
I had an old laptop with GeForce 8600M GT card, but it would only work with Linux Kernel versions up to 5.4.

Yeah I have a RX 7600. It wasn’t brand new, but lightly used, bought it off a friend who upgraded. Paid around $200 for it, so I think a pretty good deal with current pricing.
Oooh! That is a nice deal! It wouldn’t fit in this rig though, maximum thickness is 40 mm because the two capture cards “surround” it… 😅
I think the one I have is 41mm, so that would be a tight fit. Can’t you rearrange the cards a bit to make some room? With only 40mm that would be hard to fit in any modern card.
The MOBO’s expansion card sockets are placed in such a way, that I’d have to get an ATX chassi to be absolutely sure. 🫠 Anyway, I’m trying out an ASUS GeForce GT 1030 silent tomorrow to start with.

Why do you need a dedicated GPU if you don’t plan to use it anyways?
Because my CPU doesn’t have integrated graphics.

That card probably also has an insanely old firmware too, but you ought to be able to set a 550 motherboard to bios mode instead of uefi and get past it.
I didn’t mention that in the OP but I did try both UEFI and legacy BIOS compatibility mode.
Would’ve been cool if I had the skills to flash the old card with some new firmware 🤣
Why are you even using a dedicated video card anyway? If this is the same b550 board in your other post you already have onboard video…

Oh lol. I forgot that amd CPUs can be put in that situation too.
I usually use Debian and have had to use legacy (bios) booting with csm loaded on those boards before. so if you can tolerate an old man distribution, try legacy booting the Debian text mode net installer.
