For development? I’ve been using old Dell Latitudes. They are easier to work on than HPs, generally sturdy, and Debian runs great on them. You can get a used E7440 for next to nothing, and old RAM is still cheap.

I don’t know what this one has but Mint runs OK on it.

I’ve got a Acer Aspire One with an Atom in it that I still use. The form factor is awesome, I wish it was 64 bit and 4 gig though. Just use it for emergency firewall management as I don’t think it is getting updates.

And by outdated, like 2015. Old E7440s or even older work great with added memory. New battery and you have a nice laptop out of the e waste pile. The only weak spot are drives, SSDs are expensive so to stay cheap you might have to use old spinny in there.

Used to be able to buy PCs running Xenix, with Lotus and vi. Who really needed anything more?

Also things like pfblocker/pihole. Pfblocker has made it shocking to see someone else use the Internet.

Yeah i guess the hardware is the variable factor. My stuff is pretty old, so maybe it is better-supported.

Ive got a 1070 and the nvidia drivers work fine. They are pretty good about updating along with Tumbleweed updates. Other stuff around is Intel.

I seriously can’t imagine what could be going on here. I’ve got opensuse, debian, and mint in the household for non-savvy people and it all just works. I have a rare problem with a Tumbleweed update, like twice a year. Printing, wifi, everything. It is way more stable than my Enterprise-managed Windows 11 machine. So I am seriously curious what problems people are having.
