I self-host mine for free. It breaks very rarely, and when it does, incoming mail gets replayed by the sending server for a coupde of days, so I have time to fix it.

Manually set up Wireguard, here.

Make sure to avoid miscounting disk buffers. That’s kernel-owned memory that might eat a ton of RAM, but

1. It gets freed instantly when your apps need more memory
2. Until then, it increases your overall system performance by avoiding the need to read from storage (making it somewhere around 10ish times faster).

My current router is an ancient laptop running NixOS. Ethernet in via the Ethernet port, and out via a USB converter. It probably could serve as a WiFi AP too, but currently I have a dumb OpenWRT in bridge mode for that.

The same laptop also selfhosts Prosody, coturn, LiveKit and stuff.

I don’t really see how a proper router would be better than that.

I don’t know of any end-to-end electronics fabrication in Europe… Having the final assembly done in EU is kinda misleading if everything else comes from elsewhere, no?
