Additionally, the jobs AI can adequately replace are often the jobs companies use to train and vet people beginning their careers. Put another way, you don’t get any senior devs if you replace all your junior devs with chatbots.

Most salaried people in the US have hours on paper but are coerced into working more. I’m theoretically supposed to work 40 hours per week, but if the production line is down they beg me to come in. I can say no, but the people who say no don’t get promoted, and when layoff season starts, they’re the first on the chopping block.

13·7 days agoI don’t know if any phones have this, but on a PC you can set up multiple partitions and have the password you entered determine which is logged into on boot. Then if the ICE brownshirts demand to see your sick memes, you can show them a boring install with some basic apps, instead of the install where you’re informing the denizens of the interwebs that Trump raped kids and the entire GOP is covering it up.

1·8 days agoIt feels like we’re losing ground. Why does 8GB of RAM feel totally insufficient to browse the same websites I used 12 years ago with 4? I’m so happy I maxed out my motherboard’s RAM (32) when I built a PC in 2021.

Ebooks are trivially easy to find online, or you can check them out from your local library.
There’s a free and open source program called Calibre that can manage your ebook library, change file formats, edit visual formatting, and even remove proprietary DRM.
Don’t let Amazon being a bad company prevent you from using your old Kindle.

1·11 days agoCheck out some Doom Eternal speedruns. (I guess 100% speedruns so you aren’t seeing people glitching through the game.) That game is actually extremely fast-paced. Good players are swapping through all fifty of their weapons every 4 seconds. Come to think of it, I wonder if the need for gore kills is a consequence of me sucking. (I think the chainsaw for ammo is unavoidable, though.)

1·11 days agoI didn’t like the mandatory finishing moves either, and to be honest, I didn’t finish the game, but I got a lot further than DOOM 2016 and I thought the gunplay felt really snappy and satisfying in the way the OG games did. The levels were diverse and I actually liked the platforming puzzles, but I’m also the kind of guy who played surf maps in CounterStrike and strafejump races in Quake, so I’m predisposed to that sort of thing.
Oh well. They made a thing and it’s not for everyone. I wonder if you’d like The Dark Age. I haven’t played it yet.

4·12 days agoIt really depends. There are great examples like DOTA2 and Path of Exile, and miserable examples, like every crappy gacha game.
Riot is kinda in the middle for me. Shame they nuked 2XKO after not telling anyone about it or catering to the people they neglected to tell about it.
You could do some OG lithography (the litho in lithography means “stone”) by masking the white or block parts of the QR code and painting on an etchant. I don’t know what the best etchants for stone are, but I imagine HF-containing glass etch would do the trick. (Be very, very careful with HF.)
Instead of making the QR code point to something, you could encode the information directly. A short blurb about a person would fit.
I didn’t say you lived in a metro area. I said those distances and travel times are only realistic in the parts of the US people consider very densely populated.
That’s how the US is in certain metro areas. In the boonies there are hundreds of miles of rural back roads where people drive 60mph during rush hour.

1·13 days agoI want the latter, and tariffs are not the only way go about protectionism. There is also subsidization, which is how the US has maintained its defense and agriculture industries. If we want stuff made domestically, we’re going to have to pay for it. Subsidies are generally preferable to tariffs because they can be paid through progressive taxation instead of regressive taxes on consumers.
Psshh you won’t trick me. They weigh the same.

A lot of Americans live 30 minutes from the nearest real grocery store.
But yeah they still don’t need a lifted truck to go there. It’s not like the cashiers at the Wal Mart Super Center are going to be impressed by their Carolina Squat lifted white pavement princess, but that’s what they insist on driving.
They could have made it even faster with a coat of red paint, but engineers thought that would have pushed the materials past their limit, so they chose to leave it black.
