2·10 days agoUpdate, kernel panic happened today, so I updated the BIOS settings:
- tCL (CAS Latency): Change from 11 to 12
- tRCD: Change from 11 to 12
- tRP: Change from 11 to 12
- tRAS: Change from 28 to 32
- DRAM voltage changed from 1.488 to 1.530
All the initial values were Auto values. I’ll let it sit for at least a month with no reboots before calling it fixed. I’ll set a reminder

15·11 days agoThat was kinda the plot in 007: First Light
Spoiler
The AI was sold to MI6 and had perfect accuracy. Turned out the guy who sold it sent a fix team every time it was wrong and MI6 made a “mistake” because of bad Intel, so the team could clean up the scene and make it look like the AI was right all along.

1·11 days agoThe EULA is not beholden to copyright law. “Limited license” is in direct contradiction to European Court of Justice’s ruling that if a commoner expects a “sale” then all rights given by a sale are protected which cannot be limited by an EULA. Right now regulators are questioning whether having a “Buy” button constitutes a sale and is thus protected by the ECJ ruling in UsedSoft vs. Oracle. Nevertheless they’re trying to combat this behaviour either through interpreting current regulations or by creating new regulations to close potential loopholes.

1·11 days agoI’m not American, so no. A contractual term can only be provided before entering a purchase agreement in EU. Copyright law is still in effect, but all the EULAs you read after purchase (e.g. during boot) are void here.

7·12 days agoEU is very adamant that you can only present contractual terms before entering an agreement (purchase) not after. All those EULAs showing up in the game before you are shown the main menu are void in EU.
If the EULA is instead embedded in the purchase flow with an “I agree” checkbox then the UsedSoft vs. Oracle case is likely still precedence to argue that you own the copy. Reason is that the purchase flow uses the “Buy” terminology and nowhere outside of the EULA it mentions rental/lease/limited/etc. This would breach the “reasonable consumer expectations” as the storefront didn’t make it clear in their purchase experience that it was only a limited license you obtained and that a normal consumer doesn’t expect “limited” when reading “Buy”. This part has though not been tested in court yet but most legal scholars agree that this would be the likely outcome should someone bring it up.

25·12 days agoLuckily the EULA doesn’t apply when obtaining it through unauthorized means since the EULA would never have been accepted upon a purchase that didn’t happen.
(It is though copyright infringement, but you still have more ownership over the bytes on your own disk since DRM would have been removed or neutered)

4·21 days agoFor a project I liked I saw that the translation of the UI was only about 1% complete for my native language. I decided to dedicate the weekend to get it above 95%. This was apparently the part that seemed too hard for most to make a dent in, but across several new versions my language is still 100%. I think my groundwork made it easier for some sporadic contributors to get a small bit of dopamine when updating the few new strings in a release to see it hit 100% again.

0·24 days agoOnly thing I wish for Christmas is to be able to replace the RAM and mobo in one of my servers. It is failing with a kernel panic about once a week and it is an old DDR3 platform I planned to upgrade back in January. I have isolated the issue to a hardware fault but left without a solution…

Why don’t you start by turning off your device?
