  • We can have all the benefits without many of the downsides if we fixed the perverse incentives on harvesting data. Ban creeper glasses. Regulate and license these glasses as they should be used: medical assistance devices with strict controls on use of data.

The problem never was technological. The problem has always been regulating and limiting how people use tools in negative ways, from guns, cars, drugs, food, etc. For some reason we are blind to the idea of doing more of the same with big tech? This is long overdue.

  • The typing is the means of communicating the thinking. If you are “doing the thinking” and the AI is doing the “typing” then either you are instructing the AI to generate additional content without original thought (which is a waste of your time, the AI’s time, and the reader’s time), or the AI is actually doing some of the thinking (in which case your job can be automated).

The programers use AI to make art. The artists use AI to write. The writers use AI to program. I think we’re all in denial by both just how much our own value is at risk, and also the real value of AI (less than advertised). A bit paradoxical.

  • I don’t know about the sources. If you read some of the sources, for example DHH’s own words in his blog posts, while you find conservative grievances which is certainly fair game for disagreement, there are no smoking guns of far right behaviour.

The comparison of omarchy’s design philosophy is particularly egregious. The philosophy is opinionated software. What does consuming a product without being in personal control of every single detail have to do with politics?

  • The problems start to happen when buisnesses adopt this en masse. Expect all banks to implement this for example. You can use Firefox all you want, but then you won’t be able to do online banking.

Standards are really fucking important to help people stay functional in a society. This is one area that the ANCAP mindset just gets it totally wrong, unless you like the idea of being a hermit.

Anyway, we are already seeing some websites basically reject browsers like Firefox because they basically give the consumer too much protection and freedom. Arguably we’ve seen this before, but this may be a new tier of corporate lockout of open standards as consumer protection gets thrown in the trash. Thanks America.
