I’m not - that’s a used price.
I don’t have a problem with used - all my drives are used, and they typically last 5-10 years. I have some drives from 2010 that are still running.
New drives fail too, so relying on drives being new to prevent failures is foolish. The only defense against failures is duplication (which 3-2-1 backup falls under).
Whats just as important is to use a file system that can detect and repair data errors (such as ZFS).


LTO tapes are 18TB today, raw - 48TB compressed.
How much data you got?
At that size I can probably build 2 Proxmox boxes with drives and compete very well on the costs.
A single 14TB disk is about $270 today - that’s in the same realm as a tape.
But tape also requires a drive, and that gets pricey fast.

I haven’t done the math, but even SMB’s don’t use tape today.
They may do a local replica and then some kind of local-hardware-based cloud backup solution, because cost and capability.


Yea, getng people to do something is a challenge, let alone connecting a calendar to your server.
That’s where we should be today, but people really don’t understand how this stuff works, and won’t even try to learn even if you explain it in simple terms.


I’m upvoting for your openness and directness about your approach, what you will and won’t do.
You built this for you and are sharing, for us to do with it as we will.
It’s an interesting idea for basic printing.


Someone else mentioned just using a calendar client that can connect to different calendars.
I use Fossify to connect to calendars through Davx, which includes my Google calendar (configured it through DavX).
This way all entries remain independent. And I can filter my calendar view based on source calendar, and all entries are color coded (automatically) by which calendar they’re on.
I know it’s not exactly what you were asking for, buy it’s one way to approach it.
Or, just completely bypass any config by simply not using IP6 for an environment where it offers no advantage

I mean if you’re making a statement that after decades of maturation this should be true, I wholeheartedly agree.
If the statement is of an observation of conditions today, oh, my sweet summer child.
Even commercial, enterprise-targeted stuff is junk today (looking at you Sharp, with your supposed LDAP-capable crap that just decides to lose it’s fucking mind for no reason).

There’s no ‘wearing it down’ - age is age.
If anything, unpowered drives die faster because lubricants slowly harden over time. Ah least a running drive is unlikely to suffer that fate.
Also, any drive can lose magnetic cohesion on areas of the platter - with a running drive that’s maintained by a system like ZFS, these areas of magnetic loss can be automatically discovered and corrected.
Everything I’ve read (and from my own anecdotal experience) drives on a shelf die every bit as frequently as running drives, if not more often.
But in the end, don’t go doing anything just because you feel like “you have to”. I have a dozen smaller drives (500GB to 1 TB) that are just waiting for a purpose. I have a plan for them, but it’s not urgent. Eventually they’ll go in a Proxmox/TrueNAS/UnRAID box, when I can find a motherboard for the right price with low power draw (the drives will be the worst power consumer anyway).
I spend my day in RDP/SSH
