Probably because you can just modify the OS to say you’re old enough. With a closed source OS you can’t.

In reality it just means you can’t use the OS as age verification, and will have to use other means if you’re into that. Personally I just slap on a VPN and go somewhere that hasn’t succumbed to this idiocy…

I don’t think anybody does detail quite like Rockstar. When I finished Read Dead 2 I just sat through the credits in awe at the sheer amount of effort that had gone into it. Animals skinned while you watch, lines recorded twice for close and far away dialogue, whole hunting and animal systems. Subtle changes in dialogue depending on how you play.

Compare to “AAAA” games like Far Cry Avatar, with an equal number of systems, but none are really fleshed out, and the whole thing feels very half arsed in comparison.

I think the only game to really come close to them is Baldur’s Gate 3.

Yeah, the online stuff is pure fucking greed, but I don’t care for that. I don’t play it. I never loaded GTAO or Red Dead Online. I don’t demand I be allowed to pay extra for more DLC. It’s all in the base game I already bought. I play it, I finish it, it goes on the shelf. Or it went on the shelf. RIP discs, I guess. :(

I do think it’s unfortunate that CDPR have hit their biggest successes with their open world games, because I don’t think their world design is up to much. Both this and Cyberpunk suffer from a main quest that screams “this is urgent” followed by opening up a map filled with icons.

And most of those icons are boring bullshit, but there’s enough good stuff out there that you’ll want to explore them anyway, only to be disappointed by a single troll fight or something 90% of the time rather than some interesting story.

Hate how the armour sets have a bonus but you’ll probably never upgrade them far enough to activate it…

What leads them is money, and the fear that all that oil money they’ve relied on for the last 100 years or so is going to run out at some point.

That’s why games like It Takes Two and Mass Effect will be culled. That’s why it’ll be wall-to-wall live-service war-slop and sports-slop until the day everyone with even a hint of creativity quits, and then it carries on anyway in a shambling AI form. And people will still lap it up.
