Selfhosted@lemmy.world•[META] Do you want to know how the sausage is made?English
10·8 hours agoYes, we want to know how the sausage is made, just like with all FOSS.
what does the community actually expect from devs
Don’t flood the zone.
It really isn’t so long ago when making an app required various stages of completion and testing, usually including other people. I expect from devs that they follow that well-established road and stop with the silly “who has the time” argument I’m hearing so often lately. Sorry, you didn’t actually say that.
Not sure why we should be interested in the Polish though. Are you from there?
I’m feel you’re jumping right into the problem from some tutorial or not-so-common knowledge. We do not have that context.
Is “x11-user” defined anywhere? sddm must know what to do with that setting.
pol = pea-pol?
If that’s a common abbr. resp. bastrdzn. I never saw it before… all it reminds me of is {N}chan.

Ask@piefed.social•Please ELI5 the arguments people use to claim it's possible to use AI/LLMs ethically, locally, openly etc.English
2·1 day agoThanks.
Yes. “open-weights” means they publish the AI model file to the public and people can download and run it themselves.
So “they” are the big corpos involved in AI? I have my hard time wrapping my head around this explanation (although somebody else said the same so it must be true /s). What’s open-weight supposed to mean here? And, usually the thing you get for free is inferior to the paid vrsion - how does that work?

Linux@programming.dev•KDE Picks Enterprise, Documentation, and Styling as New 2026-2028 GoalsEnglish
3·3 days agoThanks.
That’s much more pedestrian than the wild ideas zipping through my mind when I saw the term.
Of course I can totally get behind this.
My KDE experience has been nothing but nice so far, like the whole project is nice.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Windows 11 is failing as an operating systemEnglish
2·3 days agoAt least I wait for it on company time.
You think I didn’t?
And yes, the story above was about getting them all up to Win11. It’s sad that IT-illiterates see “let’s do what M$ says” as the only option wrt security.
Not a ray of sunshine coming through, no shape to the clouds, just uniform grayness, no rain even? It feels like the sky is hanging too low and there’s something wrong with your eyes, like you didn’t notice you left your laptop at 25% brightness since last night. For weeks on end. Starting now until December or whenever the first snow comes. If it comes that is.
It may seem like relief when a too-hot summer is still fresh in your mind, but have you ever even experiened that and still say you love it?

Linux@lemmy.ml•Windows 11 is failing as an operating systemEnglish
4·3 days agoI remember that too! My crappy old computer. I bought the cheapest SSD they had and it was so much faster.
And I’ve been thinking about the latter too.
BTW I truly hope your Windows takes 5min for a cold boot, and not your Linux, because that would mean there’s something wrong with it or the hardware.
Add to that unbroken cloud cover 24/7 😙👌

30·4 days agoWINDOWS 11 IS GREAT IF YOU DONT VALUE YOUR TIME
Even with that caveat I wouldn’t agree.
But there’s something to it.
For me, a decade of Linux user, having been forced to work with a bunch of Windows laptops recently, even the difference between 10 and 11 was palpable. Not only in resource usage but also in just getting around the system, running updates, trying to disable the stock ticker (?WTF?) etc.
I’m glad this is getting at least a few upvotes.
You can still play around with it, but the base should be boringly solid and widely compatible.
Then make it unique. And I don’t mean to say that distro developers or even users shouldn’t be creative.
