I use Proton but now I think if I’m gonna send mails to a Gmail anyway, there’s no much difference except for the subscription ones not being scanned. And for those sites that I have to enter an email, I use addy.io alias or Firefox relay.
I use mailbox.org because both proton and tuta do not support IMAP, which is generally needed to use a 3rd party client. Mailbox.org is also pretty cheap and is pretty private as far as the non-E2EE providers go. And in terms of E2EE it is going to be used so rarely that is basically doesn’t matter, the type of person that would use tuta/proton would probably be willing to setup PGP with you, and E-mail isn’t a secure communications platform anyways, so you might as well just use Signal, XMPP, briar, etc…

I don’t want to have to use their stupid little bloated software just to send and read E-mails in a client of my choosing.
I suspect their encryption scheme falls outside the SMTP/IMAP protocols hence the requirement for an application to decrypt/encrypt the message before being delivered to and from your desired email reader.
Thunderbird doesn’t know how to decrypt/encrypt an email if it isn’t given the tools to do so 🤷♂️
I recently got Stalwart running with Bulwark as the front end to actually send emails. I have Stalwart behind Caddy for https and Stalwart only exposes http because I don’t want to mess with pop and imap. Instead I have it using JMAP, which Bulwark is designed for, because it’s simpler and more secure. Receiving emails works from some basic testing against my personal Gmail account. Sending email was a bit more complicated, but I ended up using SMTP2GO for outgoing mail and it worked in aforementioned testing. Their free tier is more than enough for personal email and I can switch to a different smtp relay in the future if I choose to.

Does anybody actually socially communicate via email anymore?
I realize it’s still in vogue for workplaces, and sometimes companies for support tickets and such, and maybe done doctors, but does anybody actually use it casually to send messages?
I’m dealing with budget issues at the moment but will be moving to a paid service relatively soon, but I think I’m in the majority that uses it almost exclusively only for receipts and getting login codes as a 2FA measure.
Every place I’ve ever bought anytime from that’s attached to that email sends what must be millions of emails to me about different deals and shit, but has anyone ever even opened any of those? Pffffft not below the age of 45 or so I bet.
Email feels obsolete now. It’s a decent backbone (hence why every other account is tied to it), but it’s literally only there to be a common thread in a normie’s tech flow. I haven’t heard of people actually conversing with email since right after I stopped sending messages with mine, about the same time everyone got phones that first of all could send texts (my first phone could not send texts, was just able to save some phone numbers and call those easily. Then visual voicemail started happening, everyone got texting (and then data) plans, and email died off in popularity (at least in my circles) almost instantly.

Tuta (Germany) and Murena Workspace are good mail providers. Murena (France) apart is an excelent all in one substitute for GDrive and other Google services. They also sell Fairphone with own OS (eOS)

Maybe, but it’s really what Murena offers, + own Mobile OS and also Smartphones by FairPhone, even a special OS for kids, it’s a whole good infrastructure, not only a mailprovider. All European and OpenSource. It’s way more as offered by others, apart of Google. I didn’t find a better service to substitute Google.

Huh, surprised nobody has mentioned Tuta Mail yet. Cheap monthly and annual plans, hosted Ex-US.
Plus I have a domain, forwarded through my tutamail account, so I have unlimited email receiving addresses, at-will. :)
No fascism, no privacy violations. I’m annoyed they don’t support external clients and the mail rules are fairly limiting, but for my purposes it’s well worth the costs.
Built in calendar also can import ICS files and it has effectively replaced Gcal for my own personal private use.
Infinite aliases are great. I have an address for every company, and that keeps my inbox very clean and tidy. If one of them turns out to sell my address to spammers, I will know exactly who to blame. It’s also trivial to set up a rule for deleting everything that is sent to that address.

Domain forwarding with a wild card should work with nearly any email provider vendor worth their salt, but I was glad to find Tuta does exactly two things and does them reasonably well, and at a price I can accept.
Degoogling has been a two year journey and I’m about 90% of the way done, but only my legacy email are driving me back to Thunderbird on select systems and someday I’ll get to actually delete my entire Google account.
Fastmail 👍 Well worth the bucks imo. Super well thought out UI, private, and they work towards jmap over imap.

apt update && apt upgrade.That’s been my setup for nearly 7 years now. It’s been flawless, no deliverability issues, no maintinance headaches, just email that I own.
I use proton myself. I dont know about private browsers but it works with Thunderbird via its own decryption app Proton Bridge. Thats a good privacy solution (assuming its a secure desktop), and gives you a local backup of your email.
Mainly ignore it till someone calls me and asks “did you see that email?”
