I hope they get inundated with “reports” of an incorrect name. I mean they’ll ignore them but still…
Use CoMaps folks. FOSS, offline, and supports privacy (which is why it is an offshoot of Organic Maps)
What is wrong with organic maps?
Organic Maps itself is fine (which is what CoMaps is based from), the issue is the shareholders making money and not beimg transparent with the revenue.
From CoMaps themselves
CoMaps started to address the concerns and dissatisfaction within the Organic Maps community regarding governance, transparency, and the potential for shareholder profit at the expense of the community. The goal is to build a truly community-driven, transparent, and not-for-profit navigation app.
I like my maps with GMOs

As part of an attempt to research more single-use devices (as a way to help focus attention and reduce distractions), I recently learned that there are a variety of interesting e-ink tablets and phones sold by companies like Boox. I’m starting to realize that there are really compelling alternatives on the market that offer different kinds of value than Apple’s visionless product line.
l’ve postured in the past about replacing my Apple products, but for the fist time I’m starting to feel comfortable with the prospect of doing with really interesting and different devices. My iphone is still pretty new, but my ipad (which i use a lot) is probably due for retirement this year. This latest cowardice from Apple may have just pushed me put of the walled garden for good.
Apple gave the president a gold iPhone. Surprised?
Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss.
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
I’ve been using OsmAnd (uses OpenStreetMaps) on my iPhone and it’s been pretty great. Uninstalled Apple Maps so I don’t have to deal with this bullshit.
I’m always for more OSM usage especially as a (casual) OSM mapper but you’re a rube.

Why are they a rube?
Per the link in your screenshot OSM is following the standard of using the GNIS official name, while also keeping the displayed name as the common name until and if common usage on both sides of the border begins to reflect the official name in GNIS.
Precedent from the Gulf of Mexico/“Gulf of America” discussion as well as accepted OSM convention would suggest that once GNIS is updated (which it appears it is already),
official_name:en-US=*should be added/changed toLake America, butname=*left as is unless and until common usage on the ground on both sides of the border shifts to prefer the “Lake America” name (which seems very unlikely).Note: emphasis is mine
I think you should look up the definition of “rube”.
They really seem to want to shake me out as a customer. The union busting, the trump asslicking, and now this.
Well, happy to oblige. Already replaced my macbook air with a pallet unit lifebook, and have my sight on the new framework laptops for the trackpad haptics and general principle of serviceability, even at the premium. I was an apple customer, I was always willing to pay for the premium to get a more consistent, robust quality experience. Framework really saw the writing on the wall, and I love it. Finally there are starting to be actually valid options for running Linux with the qol of apple hardware besides asahi.
On phone frontier I have zero clue where to go, but this is really just sealing the deal of me dropping apple there too whenever this one breaks. Motorola seems promising though, we’ll see…
Same. I was feeling them out for the next gen, seeing if they were going to stick to this “privacy” tagline they keep banging on about but this isn’t a good sign.
Man I love my Fairphone. I think it’s worth considering based on what I read of your ethics and tech proficiency
Yeah that’s a big one on the list definitely, thanks!
Ive got a Motorola Edge 2022 and the phone in general I have no gripes with. The battery could be a lot better with this model. Looking forward to new phone with Graphene if they actually do that right.
This is just for Americans. From Americans. Americans are complaining. They are literally allowed to vote against this kind of behaviour.
On the Google article it was Google’s fault, on the Apple article it’s Apple’s fault. These are American companies run by American billionaires following American rules.
I feel like maybe the problem here is not Lake America, but America
Please start by understanding that corporations have more power in the US than voters.
Yeah please read into the oil and gas industry. They covered up leaded gasoline.
I think you skipped past the whole “billionaires” part in your hurry to blame an entire country. This is just more class warfare
Which federal or state law in the US commands them to rename Lake Ontario again? Please elaborate.
I suspect they use the official data source for place names for the US. Changing that would be extra work
John Appleseedless
John Crabapple
This bodes well for them getting an exemption from the ban on Red Chinese RAM.
I mean, that was kinda inevitable to be honest. Apple went with Gulf of America, now they’re going with Lake America. If Trump decided to rename Canada into America+ they’d probably go with it as well.
I’m much more interested in what having a hardware guy as their CEO will do to their products. Obviously he’s just as much of an AI sheep as anyone else in Silicon Valley right now but maybe at least we’ll get some interesting new hardware as well?

Eh. It should just keep its original name.
The whole thing kinda reminds me of Uluru, that still officially has both names… What did native americans call the Gulf of Mexico?
That spineless fucker. John apple is already fucking it up
They lost their mojo when Steve Apple passed away.
100%
And here I was looking at getting a new iPhone. Guess I’ll be switching to android.
EDIT: well fuck me sideways, night as well just get a dumbphone then.
Guess I’ll be switching to Android.
By all means, buy a device whose operating system is designed by an advertising company who also sucks Trump’s cock. After all, Google caved on this before Apple did.
You should open Google maps….
Way to fully slip Trump’s tiny penis into your mouth, John. Good start to your legacy.
Like a Vienna sausage minus the European class.
End your legacy more like; he’s been at Apple for a bloody long time
I meant legacy as CEO. But yeah, he seemed competent. Now he seems like all the rest of them – spineless.
I mean, maybe that decision wasn’t really his? Sounds like it could’ve been Tim Apple’s last minute order to do everything his majesty world leader supreme wants.
The article isn’t clear on that, I wouldn’t write off Johnny just yet.
He’s the CEO now. It makes no difference what Cook may or may not have done in his final days.
Ternus is allowing this to happen or he directed it to happen. Either way, he’s spineless because he won’t tell Trump to fuck off. If he changes course in the near future, then my opinion will change. But they kept the stupid name change of the gulf, they’ll likely keep this as well.
And to the people who would say “well what choice does he have?” That’s a form of appeasement. And I seem to remember some kind of history where that didn’t work out too well for business and government appeasing a dictator.
Eh, his calculus was likely the following:
- Trump has in the past threatened economic or financial penalties over minor, and major, disagreements
- Trump is in his last term, so he likely isn’t concerned with the political, legal, etc. ramifications of his actions
- Apple, as a company, still manufactures the majority of its product lines outside the US
- Trump is still trying to use tariffs in the US to manipulate markets and force business actions
- Either I capitulate and save Apple from potentially billions in fiscal pain and / or years of legal representation to fight said pain, or make this change and avoid all of it
- The cost of this capitulation is mostly a PR / company image issue + plus dev time to implement the change, versus a very real monetary loss
I don’t agree with his decision, but given the options available I do agree trying to keep the peace with the vindictive, unstable world leader of Apple’s largest market is in their best interest.
