Gotcha, but I still have to disagree. As a hot, sweaty person like the OC, getting enough potassium (or even sodium at times) for cycling in hot weather through diet alone would require massive quantities of food. The amount of sweating that can happen when one doesn’t have the physique for long-distance running is nuts!

The reason is kind of important, no? You can shrug and say idiots and racists, but that’s far from the whole story, not really even the primary reason. A big piece of it is people feeling disengaged from politics, which is understandable, since U.S. policy hasn’t reflected the will of the people for almost 50 years now.

More or less telegraphing that “I will not listen to what you want” and “I support evil but have the decency to feel bad about it” (like on Gaza, for example) is not a great way to motivate people in this environment.

That’s what Ben-Gvir, and other Israeli ultranationalists want. They’d still want that even if Harris were President. I just don’t see the evidence that her adminstration would be pushing back on that, given that Democratic leaders are still voting to send foreign aid to Israel.

(I’m not trying to defend the fascist regime, but I think truth matters.)

I do live in the U.S., and I’m acutely aware that it’s not a law of nature. It won’t endure forever, as some sort of fundamental human condition. It may feel that way because it’s always been there, even in our great-grandparents’ lifetimes, by we’re seeing how fragile it actually is. The nation and its values have to be maintained, as any system has to. Voting for the lesser evil every time, rather than doing the maintenance, will catch up to us. There won’t always be a next time to attempt a non-evil candidate.

It ain’t fair, there’s not always a solution or a good option, but that’s life. We need better than what Harris offered, or we’re cooked.

That’s fine, but other people (like the ones you were criticizing) may have different motivations.

What you’re demonstrating is a lack of empathy, hence the downvotes.

Look: People gotta get places, even degraded subhumans like pedestrians. (/s, obviously, but that’s the message street design conveys.) So, imagine you’re walking, and you come to yet anothet intersection with yet another stream of cars in your path. You need a clear path to proceed and not die, so you need to cars to stop, or be absent.

I don’t know about you, but I’m not clairvoyant. I can’t see the future, or view remote locations. So, if you’re like me, you can’t cross because of the cars, so you push the button provided by the city to make the cars stop, so that you can move forward and not die.

But, then, and this is where the lack of clairvoyance comes in, there’s a gap in traffic that you did not foresee! Now, you face a choice: Cross the street while not under threat of a gruesome death under the wheels of a vehicle, or wait until you have the righteousness of a pictogram of a little, white man to light your path while you walk into the path of a speeding brodozer, hoping the driver stops in time. People with a survival instinct prefer the former.

Or, without the color commentary, humans need to cross the street to get to their destination with minimum delay. Asking them to stop, wait, and do a traffic flow analysis to determine whether they need to push the walk cycle button is unrealistic. They’re not actually out to screw you, they push the button so they know that they will eventually get a walk signal, but will go earlier if possible.

It’s a rational strategy to deal with a terrible system designed by some of the dimmest people on the planet, i.e. American traffic engineers.

Exactly, a ramp, which is a major obstacle for wheelchair users. And everybody else.

That works in the United States if you’re white. If you’re brown, it’s an invitation for a cop to harass you. And if you’re Black, they’re allowed to kill you.

I figured it out a while back. It’s a definitional mismatch. While you and I think about entry level as the level at which we enter a career, the companies think of entry level as the level at which somebody enters the company. They ditched any notion of social responsibility in the form of cultivating new workers long ago.
